State of Tamworth is up for discussion during annual debate

- By DAN NEWBOULD News Reporter

KEY points and priorities will be discussed during the annual State of Tamworth debate early next week - and you could attend to watch in person.

Every year councillors gather inside the town hall to discuss the town and 2024 is no different with the event taking place on Monday night, March 11, and available to watch online or in person.

The annual debate typically involves a lively discussion about Tamworth, a look back at the work of the council over the last 12 months and an outlining of plans for the future.

The overriding goal of the debate is to make sure Tamworth Borough Council remains fit for the future. Every Tamworth councillor has the chance to comment and shape future priorities and areas of work.

This debate is one part of the process to make sure that the issues, concerns and priorities of Tamworth communities continue to be reflected in the work of the council.

Previous topics covered in years gone by include the likes of the environment, the economy, infrastructure, living in Tamworth and the town centre.

Councillor Thomas Jay, leader of the council, told the Herald: “I very much welcome and enjoy the State of Tamworth debate.

“This year it is taking place on 11 March at 6.10pm in the Town Hall. It’s an opportunity for all councillors to share what it is important to their constituents and shape the priorities for the future.

“The debate really does enable people to see democracy in action; with elected members talking about how to further improve things for the people of Tamworth. This debate is critical in making sure the council is fit for the future and delivering the services and support that Tamworth and its community needs.

“The discussions can get quite lively and it is often interesting viewing for members of the public to see how we begin to form the policies that matter to our communities.”
