New signs for college appear in town centre
NEW signs advertising facilities at the soon-to-be new Tamworth College in the heart of the town centre have appeared as rapid progress continues to be made.
One of the signs says “New college coming 2025” while another advertises some of the things that will be studied there including hospitality and catering, health and social care, computer science and IT, public services, sport, engineering, early years, trades, hair and beauty, travel and tourism and more offering full and part time courses, adult courses, apprenticeships and higher education with a QR code to scan to find out more.
A new newsletter has also been put up at the site informing of the progress that has and is already being made.
It says: “Welcome to the second communications update from Kier. We are constructing the new South Staffordshire College for Tamworth Borough Council. These regular publications will keep you updated with progress on site and what to expect in the months ahead.
“Kier are constructing a five storey (including basement) concrete frame college building. A mixture of brick work and cladding added to the facade with a shark tooth and flat roof. The new building comprises numerous classrooms, workshops, a cafe and associated communal areas.
“Since the first newsletter we have completed the temporary works to support the existing retaining wall along with the piling works and foundations. Work has commenced on drainage and the lower ground floor slab.
“Over the coming months the structure will start to grow with columns and walls being cast followed by the upper levels. The shell of the structure should be complete by late summer 2024.”
The new college building is funded by the Department for Education and Future High Streets Fund (FHSF) project and is being built by Kier on the site of the former Co-operative building, which has already been demolished, at St. Editha’s Square in College Lane. It will provide a “high-quality teaching and learning environment for staff and students”.
It will include a mix of general teaching and study spaces as well as specialist facilities such as workshops and labs. It will also feature areas for student support and public facing teaching spaces for catering, hospitality, hair and beauty.
The college will be ready to welcome new students in autumn 2024 and is expected to bring around 1,500 students, in addition to staff and visitors, into the town centre.
