Tribute to lorry crash victim, 79

The 79-year-old man who died in a tragic collision with a lorry in Callander last week has been named by police as local man Robert Kirk.

Mr Kirk died after being hit by the HGV in the town’s Main Street at around 11am on Thursday, May 9.

The incident occurred at the junction with Bridge Street, with the A84 closed to traffic as far back as Doune whilst road policing officers conducted their enquiry.

Mr Kirk was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the HGV, a 49-year-old man, was not injured.

The road was re-opened at around 5.20pm that same day.

The collision occurred in the busiest street in the town, when many motorists and pedestrian­s were nearby.

Some have paid tribute to Mr Kirk and rescue teams who attended the scene.

Johannah Turnbull took to social media to say:“rest easy Robert.you were a lovely wee man will miss you so much.”

Claire Williams said:“the emergency crew did fantastic today dealing with this tragedy of a wee resident of Callander, so sad for the man involved and the lorry driver.”

Iris Gillies added:

“Thoughts go out to this man’s family and friends at this sad time may he rest in peace. Thinking about the HGV driver as he must be devastated and in shock.”

After the tragedy, Road Policing Inspector Andrew Thomson said:“our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends at this difficult time. Enquiries are ongoing and I would ask anyone who has not already spoken to officers and can assist with our investigat­ion to get in touch

“I am keen for drivers who have dashcam footage that captures the vehicle or the pedestrian involved prior to the collision happening to contact us.

“I would like to extend my thanks to the members of the public who stopped and provided assistance.”

Officers have been busy collecting CCTV and dashcam footage of the incident to piece together the events and anyone with additional informatio­n is asked to contact Police Scotland via 101 quoting incident number 1136 of May 9.
