Festive food and gifts at Farmers’ Market

-

This Saturday Stirling Farmers’market returns to Port Street between 10am and 4pm for the final market of the year as it celebrates its 24th birthday.

Featuring 17 stalls laden with festive food, drink, crafts and gift ideas, whether you’re looking for a festive roast, an after-dinner cheeseboard, or even those all-important brussel sprouts, you’re sure to find them at the Port Street market.

The market’s resident French pastry chef, Nicole Bezanger of Nini’s Pastries, will also be on hand with her traditional festive Galette de Rois.

“The galette is a puff pastry cake with almond cream similar to frangipane that traditionally has a small figurine called a fève hidden inside,”said Nicole.

“When it is being cut the youngest family member would sit beneath the table and pick who gets each slice.

“By tradition going back to the Romans, whoever ends up with the fève is declared king or queen for the day.”

She added:“these days I make family sized galettes by special order which come with a crown for the king or queen as well as having individual ones that don’t have a fève.”

For those still struggling for gift ideas there will be a selection of craft stalls and many of the producers will be offering hampers and gift packs too.

This week’s market will be offering fresh meat, fish and shellfish, sourdough breads and scones, fudge and tablet, fresh Ayrshire vegetables, jams and chutneys, Scottish and French cakes and pastries, cheeses, butter and oatcakes, award-winning pies, holly wreaths, and a selection of jewellery and gift ideas.
