WHAT IS IT? Vango Apex 1 sleeping bag, RRP £120, vango.co.uk

I WANT IT BECAUSE: Reliability, quality and innovation are Vango’s watchwords, and every item has been designed by (and for) genuine outdoor enthusiasts. I need a sleeping bag that is light. This promises to be the pinnacle of thermal efficiency.

USEFUL FOR: Spring through to autumn.

HIGH POINT: It weighs just 1.4kg and has been created with fabrics from recycled fishing nets and EcoLoft insulation. Its Omega shape means it stays snug around your head and neck for extra heat retention. Thermal Reverb tech also reflects heat back onto your body from within.

LOW POINT: Internal length is 205cm, so I’ve lost it to the tallest members of my family.

WHAT IS IT? Barbour Portmore Waxed Parka Jacket, RRP £329, barbour.com/uk

I WANT IT BECAUSE: Us teuchters already know the joy of a Barbour jacket, don’t we? Lately, the quintessentially British brand (which dates back to 1894) has really come onto a game by modernising classic styles. This one merges parka and waxed jacket styles.

USEFUL FOR: Who says you can’t look good and be practical? Ideal for all weather, whether you’re standing by a rugby pitch or heading for the hills.

HIGH POINT: The fixed hood stands up far better against wind than detachable equivalents. The large tartan cuffs (when rolled back) and gold neck poppers are striking details. It’s a relaxed fit that comes down to mid-thigh so you can layer up until your heart is content.

LOW POINT: As if. This will be peeled off my back in old age.
