Two jailed for ‘vile’ alley rape
Police praise victim of attack for bravery
AN image of a second man who raped a vulnerable young woman in a city centre alleyway has been released as police praised the victim for her bravery.
The woman was taken to a passage off Piccadilly Gardens and subjected to a ‘vile and predatory’ attack by
Brian Jalo, 25, and 24-yearold Juan Quinones, from Middleton.
A judge said she was ‘used and abused’ and treated like a ‘sex toy’ as he jailed the pair for 12 years.
They had both denied the offence but a jury saw through their lives and convicted them both of rape on Thursday, December 21.
Following their sentencing a custody shot of Jalo was released but not one of Quinones. However, GMP has now released his mugshot.
In a statement accompanying the image, the force on Friday, December 29 commended the victim for her bravery in giving evidence at court in order to secure their convictions.
Manchester Crown Court heard she met Jalo and Quinones a day before the attack in the spring of 2021, when they exchanged Instagram details.
The following day, she visited Manchester City Centre again. At around 8pm, she went to Piccadilly Gardens alone before meeting Jalo and Quinones.
The men were captured on CCTV walking her to an alley where they raped her.
Afterwards she went to raise the alarm.
Her mobile phone was missing and has never been recovered, GMP said.
An investigation was launched and after a public appeal for information, CCTV was provided to police which led to Jalo and Quinones being identified and arrested in May of 2021.
Prosecutor Robert Wyn Jones told the court of the impact the attack had on the woman. Reading from her victim impact statement, he said: “I have found sleeping very difficult, I have recurring nightmares and found it difficult to fall asleep at night.
“This has affected both my appetite and mental health.
“I have been to therapy, I’ve felt suicidal and I have developed alcoholism.
“I have become dependent on alcohol and use it to numb my feelings.
“I constantly try to harm myself and blame myself for being so stupid to allow this to happen to me. I knew I had to wait for months for the outcome, and I was constantly worried they were going to walk free and harm some other poor girl. I isolated myself a lot.
“After time I felt like a burden, my emotional state was out of balance because
of how angry I was at the world for what happened.
I’m hoping now the trial is over I can move on and find some peace.”
A third man, Justice Tandoh, 21, of Davenport Street, Tameside, denied aiding and abetting rape; and sexual assault.
He was found not guilty of all charges.
Jalo, of Sugar Mill Square, Salford and Quinones of Aspell Close, Middleton, were both convicted of two counts of rape and jailed for 12 years. They will be on the sex offender register for life.
Sentencing, Judge Smith said Jalo saw an opportunity to ‘exploit’ the woman and take advantage of a ‘young and vulnerable girl’ for his own sexual gratification, ‘regardless’ of consent or whether she professed.
He said Quinones took the chance to ‘join in,’ which ‘demonstrated his sense of sexual entitlement.’
“In acting as you did, you encouraged the other in what he was doing,” the judge added.
In today’s statement, Detective Constable Stuart Kassim, of GMP Longsight CID, said: “I want to thank the victim for her bravery in reporting her attack and putting her trust in the police to investigate.
“This was a horrific ordeal which has been prolonged by her attackers refusing to admit their guilt and forcing her to re-live that night by giving evidence at trial. It was a vile and predatory attack on a lone woman by a pair who worked together to lure her away from safety in order to rape her. Their actions were cold and calculating and I am pleased the sentence has placed them safely behind bars.
“Ultimately, it is thanks to the bravery of the victim, as well as members of the public who answered our CCTV appeal and the dedication of the investigation team, that both offenders will now spend years of their life behind bars.
“I hope this case gives other victims reassurance that GMP will seek to arrest and prosecute offenders.
“And I hope it encourages more victims to come forwards and report what happened to them to police.”
Ruby Mckeague, Senior Crown Prosecutor for the North West Rape and Serious Sexual Offences Unit said: “Brian Peter Jalo and Juan Quinones clearly pose a significant danger to women.
“They acted together to lure a woman to a secluded area in order to rape her.
“They have shown no remorse and put the woman through the further ordeal of making her re-live what happened to her by giving evidence at a trial.
“I would like to thank the victim for supporting the prosecution of this case.”
