It was the news all Pompey fans had been waiting for inspiration captain Marlon Pack has signed a new contract.

The 33-year-old midfielder has put pen to paper on a new twoyear deal, tying him to his boyhood club until the summer of 2026.

Pack has made 70 League One appearances for the Blues since returning on a free from Cardiff two summers ago.

Speaking on the club’s website, Pompey head coach John Mousinho said: “It was so important for us to get this deal done, with everything that Marlon’s done at this football club since returning.

“He lifted the League

One trophy as captain and produced some strong performance in what was such a successful season.

"Marlon is a vital part of what we’re trying to achieve moving forward in the Championship and so we’re delighted that he’s staying.”

A lifelong fan, Pack is a graduate of the Pompey academy, departing in

2011 and going on to enjoy impressive spells with Cheltenham, Bristol City and Cardiff.

Last season, along with promotion and the League One title, Pack was named in the League One Team of the Season at the EFL awards as well as being crowned The News’ Player of the Season.

Pack enters 2024-25 having made 564 league appearances in his career, 59 of them as a sub. He has extensive Championship experience with Bristol City and Cardiff.

Remaining in negotiations with Joe Morrell and Zac Swanson, Pack and Connor Ogilvie were the only two of 14 out of contract players offered new deals.

Ogilvie signed a new twoyear contract earlier this month.

*Pompey have been drawn at home to Championship rivals Millwall in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

The tie will be played at Fratton Park in the week beginning August 12.

The two clubs have only ever met once in the League Cup before, the Lions winning 2-1 at The New Den in August 2021 after Reeco Hackett-fairchild had given Pompey an early lead.
