Trio didn’t have the impact they would’ve liked
Taking a look at three players who arrived at Pompey during the January 2021 transfer window.
Harvey White
The promising youngster was recruited on loan from Spurs for the remainder of the season, yet would play a bit-part role at Fratton Park.
White, below, netted the winner at Oxford United on his full debut, yet, of his 22 appearances, just six were starts.
The midfielder showed some good touches and impressed in parts, but when Danny Cowley arrived as interim head coach, he was on the bench for 10 of the last 11 matches.
White is now playing for Stevenage, who he joined permanently in the summer.
George Byers
It appeared to be something of a coup when Kenny Jackett signed the attacking midfielder on loan from Championship side Swansea in January 2021.
However, Byers struggled to nail down a regular spot, firstly under Jackett and then interim head coach Cowley.
Of his 15 appearances, just five were starts, while he also suffered from a lack of a defined role, operating either as a number 10, central midfielder or left winger.
Byers has since flourished after moving to Sheffield Wednesday permanently in the summer of 2021.
Charlie Daniels
The former Bournemouth favourite turned down a new deal at Shrewsbury to make the switch to Fratton Park in January 2021.
Much was anticipated from the left-back, who the previous season had featured in the Premier League, but he proved to be a crushing disappointment for the Blues.
After an initial fivegame run in the starting line-up, a below-par Daniels was in and out of the side for the remainder of the campaign, before kept on the bench for the final four fixtures.
After 18 games and one goal, he was unsurprisingly released on a free by Cowley in the summer of 2021. A short spell followed at Colchester before he retired.
