Big book donation to build on literacy skills
Around 500 primary pupils across the region are now the proud recipients of a free copy of a children’s book thanks to a housebuilder.
‘Cones and Building Homes’ was commissioned by Persimmon Homes and written by author Chris Madeley.
The literary offering is part of a series that follows the adventures of cones as they explore the world around them.
Beyond its plot, the book serves a dual purpose of raising awareness of health and safety among primary school-aged pupils – as well as showcasing the construction sector and the world of work.
Darren Mackay, a land manager with Persimmon North Scotland, handed over copies of the book to youngsters during a visit to St Dominic’s RC Primary School in Crieff recently.
While there, Mr Mackay met head teacher Elizabeth Hunter and Councillor John Rebbeck, the convener of Perth and Kinross Council’s learning and families committee.
Cllr Rebbeck said: “We recognise the importance of fostering a love for reading and learning from an early age.
“The generous donation from Persimmon North Scotland will undoubtedly enrich the lives of our young learners, teaching them about health and safety and construction.
“We extend our gratitude to Persimmon North Scotland Homes for its donation.”
Mr Mackay declared: “We’re delighted to be supporting primary schools across Perth and Kinross with this donation.
“The books are a fun way for young people to learn about the world of construction and the importance of safety.
‘‘Hopefully they will also inspire some of the pupils to consider a career in construction in the future.
“We want to leave a positive legacy in the areas we operate in and I want to thank Perth and Kinross Council for helping us ensure these books reach as many local schools as possible.”
The books are being delivered to primary schools across the region, coinciding with new developments in the area.
Persimmon Homes submitted an amended application for 222 properties on land south-west of Crieff ’s Broich Road last year.
