US buyer sets sights on Saints ownership

- SCOTT BURNS

A top US litigation lawyer is aiming to complete his purchase of St Johnstone by the end of the season.

Adam Webb has agreed a deal to buy long-serving owner Geoff Brown’s 75 per cent shareholding.

Brown has had several approaches to sell and has turned down more lucrative offers because he feels Webb is the man best-placed to take his beloved Perth club forward.

The-80-year-old – who bought Saints in 1986 – announced he was selling his majority shareholding in December 2022, around the same time his son Steve stood down as chairman.

The Brown family have held a majority shareholding in the club for almost four decades, with Geoff sanctioning a move from Muirton Park to its current home of Mcdiarmid Park shortly after taking control in the 1980s.

Giving an update on the sale, Webb confirmed: “As noted in media reports, Saints in America, LLC has been negotiating with Geoffrey Brown, OBE toward purchasing his controlling interest in St Johnstone FC.

“The process is ongoing and we will not make a detailed statement at this time.

“We are at liberty to state, however, that we are optimistic about the transaction being approved and finalised in short order and we look forward to serving as custodians of the Club for many years to come.

“The Browns and the staff at St Johnstone have been a pleasure to deal with and the fans and the people of Perth have been most welcoming.

“We are excited to take on the challenge to grow the Club through success on the pitch, improving the fan experience, dedication to the community, and respect for the 140 years of history and tradition at St Johnstone. “Come on you Saints!” The one minor issue is that Webb also owns a 10 per cent shareholding in Cambridge

United.

He put cash in to help the English League One side to buy back their stadium and build a new training facility.

Webb has no involvement in team affairs and there wouldn’t be a crossover.

The Scottish Football Association and English Football League have both been asked to approve his involvement in both clubs but all sides are confident that will pass without issue.

Webb, who has sent up a Saints in America LLC company in Georgia to buy the club, has convinced Brown that he is the man to take on the ownership of the team that he has overseen since 1986.

The American and business partner Matthew Klase were in Scotland for talks, to look around the club and they also took in Saints’ matches with Ross County and St Mirren back in February.

The Browns and the staff at have been a pleasure to deal with and the fans have been most welcoming Adam Webb
