Camping d’Angers Lac de Maine, Maine-et-Loire
This is one of a small number of CityKamp sites, which are part of the Huttopia network. We hadn’t stayed on a Huttopia site before and were well impressed.
As the name implies, the site is not far from the centre of the city of Angers in western France, and one of the plus points for motorhomers is that there are bus stops only a short walk away. There’s a frequent service to the centre of Angers, via a large Carrefour; in the other direction is Bouchemaine, a lovely village with riverside eateries; you can also walk from there to the confluence of the Maine and the Loire.
The site is spacious and well laid out: level grass pitches around the edge are divided by hedges and trees, and a group of statics sits on one side. In the middle, all well laid out, are the amenities block, reception with shop, a bar and restaurant (which serves home-made pizzas), and a heated swimming pool and games area.

Angers is a beautiful medieval city, well worth the journey. At the western end of the Loire (though it is actually on the Maine), the city has two walking routes painted on the pavements, so it’s easy to find your way around. But pick up the free map/guide from the site office before you venture out and about.
We made a beeline for the medieval castle, and were bowled over by a set of fourteenth century tapestries depicting the apocalypse.
In the summer, you can take a boat trip along the river. For the more energetic, there is a large network of cycle routes, which can be accessed directly from the site, and you can hire bikes if you haven’t brought your own. The adjacent Lac de Maine is a centre for sailing and other aquatic pursuits.
