Big moments part of Mikey’s growth

MIKEY Lewis has been credited for “chasing the big moments” in a way that he did not used to, after his man-of-the-match display for Hull KR in their away win against Leeds Rhinos.

Hull KR coach Willie Peters has seen an evolution in the 23-year-old stand off in recent times.

Lewis was responsible for several key moments in attack and defence at Headingley and he also had some fun during and after the game, shushing home fans at the end by putting a finger to his lips.

Discussing the player’s big moments at Leeds, KR coach Peters said: “It’s all part of Mikey’s growth. He’s hasn’t been in games where he should have been in the past, and what I mean by that is some clutch moments when he was a kid, he was only young. Now he’s finding a way to chase the big moments.

“The players that stand out from the rest are the ones that chase those big moments. He chased the game instead of just sitting back and waiting for it to come to him.”

Another KR star in the spotlight was Ryan Hall. There had been pre-match talk about how he might respond to facing Leeds away – where he is a legend and heading back to next year. But a productive effort, including a try, answered that.

Peters said: “Hally was very good. He got us out of trouble. He’s still doing it, isn’t he? Leeds are lucky to have him next year but Hally has still got a lot to give us and there’s a lot that he wants to achieve with us.”

Reflecting on the resilience and recovery at Headingley, after trailing 6-0 at the break and then late in the game, Peters added: “Even if we lost that, I’d be sitting saying I’m proud of the players because, to put ourselves in a position to win that game, I thought we had to defend our line.

“There was loads of adversity at different times. But we found a way to defend. And when you find a way to get points off the back of it then it’s a more pleasing bus ride home.”
