How May’s diet is helping Burgess find form at KR

JOE Burgess has explained how Tyrone May and his peculiar diet have been a key factor in his excellent Hull KR form.

The Robins winger has had a superb start to life at Craven Park, scoring an impressive seven tries in six appearances.

That form has earned him plenty of praise, with coach Willie Peters indicating the club would be looking to start negotiations over a new contract after his man-of-the-match performance in the Challenge Cup victory over Leigh Leopards.

Burgess arrived at the club after a season in which, by his own admission, he did not hit the sort of form expected of him following an impressive career in both Super League and the NRL.

But he has recaptured that form following his move from Salford Red Devils after settling in with Rovers.

And when asked to explain the key behind his form, he revealed how a diet of steak and eggs had been a key component to his performances.

“I’m on a bit of a diet change this year,” he said. “I was living with Tyrone May for five or six weeks and I thought he was crackers with the food he was eating, he was just eating steak and eggs all the time.

“So I thought whilst I was living with him I’d try it myself and I feel a lot better from it, so I’ve carried it on. I think that’s been a big change.

“He never ate in the morning, he fasted and then he would have half a cow for his dinner. Before,

I’d just have normal things really, chicken, rice and veg. But I’ve cut carbs completely out and just going with avocado and cheese on its own. I feel like I’ve got a lot more energy.”

Burgess has been known to have fun during media interviews, and this one was no different.

Perhaps inexplicably around these parts, Burgess admitted he had not indulged in a pattie butty since his move to the city.

“A pattie butty, what’s that?” he said. After admitting that his preference was to put a pie in a bun, he added: “I’ve not actually had many of them to be fair, but I do miss the

Wigan pies, they’re a bit crap around here!”

But on more serious matters, he admitted that he was pleased with how life at Rovers had gone so far. “It’s always good to have a positive record, it’s been a while since I’ve been like this. I just want to keep going with it now and who knows where I’ll end up.

“I didn’t have the best of seasons myself, if you put the work in early you usually get rewards at the end and I probably didn’t do that much often. There were a few other things going on as well that didn’t help but I’ll take the responsibility for myself.

“Whereas this year I’ve really got stuck into the opportunity

I’ve got. My metres are up, my carries are up and I’ve got tries off the back of that. I’ve earned them.”
