A FORMER Tesco store in Glasgow is set to be turned into the city’s “biggest Asian supermarket”.

Longdan Ltd submitted plans in May to convert the former Tesco Extra store in the city’s Forge Retail Park.

The company was bidding to take over the unit, creating a supermarket, food court and unique event space.

Founded in 2006, the firm is known as the “Home of Asia”. It is also regarded as “the largest Asian retailer in the United Kingdom, with 14 stores”.

It sells more than 6000 speciality products, including Vietnamese, Japanese, Korean, Chinese food and more, in- store and online.

Planning documents previously submitted revealed the company want to “launch the biggest Asian supermarket in Glasgow” at the facility on 33 Beardmore Way in the East End.

According to the plans, the site would be a “one- stop destination for Asian goods and services in Glasgow, including groceries, dining, entertainment”.

Papers also state it would provide a “harmonious fusion of Asian culture and Scottish products”.

Plans previously said the supermarket would be a 4800 square metre space, selling chilled and frozen food and ingredients, including in bulk.

Meanwhile, the hospitality area in the store will be made up of 20 food stalls and two restaurants, seating up to 200 people.

A distribution centre was also outlined in the submission, which would utilise the existing service yard and loading bay and house a maximum of 50 vehicles.

Now, council bosses have approved the plans for the new store.

The local authority granted the application subject to conditions on August 29.

The approval document said: “The proposal was considered to be in accordance with the Development Plan and there were no material considerations which outweighed the proposal’s accordance with the Development Plan.”
