Loyalists to march on same day as republicans

SEVERAL loyalist protestant parades are due to take place on the same day as an Irish republican march being held in Glasgow next month.

The Royal Black Chapter is holding a number of parades across the city on August 10.

Various Royal Black chapters have given notice of 10 parades in the morning and late afternoon.

On the same day, the Friends of Irish Republican Prisoners Welfare Association ( IRPWA) is holding a march from the East End into the city centre and back.

There is no clash of timings and none of the parades will encounter one another.

The Royal Black parades are either before 9am or after 3.30pm, while the IRPWA is at noon.

The Ancient Sons of William Royal Black Preceptory is parading from Cathedral Square to Broomielaw at 8.45am and again from Clyde Place to Castle Street at 3.30pm.

Other parades are taking place in the west from Haugh Road, in the south west at Brand Street and Elder Park, while more are being held in the East End at Dennistoun and Tollcross.

The Glasgow Times reported earlier this week the IRPWA is marching from Watson Street near Glasgow Cross into the city centre and back to Moir Street at Barrowland Park.

The council has been notified around 500 people are expected to take part in the parade with others likely following on the side.

There has been a large police presence alongside previous IRPWA marches in Glasgow.

Police will be in attendance at both sets of events and have been consulted in the normal course of planning for processions.

It is understood no concerns have been raised at present about the timing of the parades.

A spokesperson for Glasgow City Council said: “We’re following the process set out in legislation for both processions, which includes consulting with police.”
