Man ‘ shoplifted on industrial scale’
A MAN who stole more than £ 500 worth of alcohol from a Glasgow supermarket has been jailed.
Danut Farago appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court from custody for sentencing on Wednesday after pleading guilty to stealing a quantity of alcohol from Asda in Robroyston on April 13.
The court heard how staff working in the Monument Drive store became aware that 15 bottle tags had been removed and put in the electrical aisle.
A CCTV review was then carried out which showed Farago entering the shop, going to the alcohol aisle, selecting various items – with a value of £ 550 – and removing the security tags on all of them before placing them into an Asda bag.
The 45- year- old then left the store via the self- checkouts and made no effort to pay.
Footage showed Farago making off in a vehicle.
Police were contacted and following investigations officers traced Farago at Glasgow Airport on April 27.
The procurator fiscal told the court that Farago had been intending to catch a flight.
He was arrested, cautioned and charged to which he made no reply. There was no recovery of the goods.
His lawyer told the court his client had been in custody since April 29.
Addressing Farago, of Greenock, sheriff Bernard Ablett said: “This was shoplifting on an industrial scale and I don’t believe for a second the £ 550 worth of alcohol was for your own consumption.
“In the circumstances, given the nature of the offence, no other sentence is appropriate other than a sentence of imprisonment.”
