Late goal frustrates Jags yet again

- PAUL THOMSON

EK Thistle boss Aaron Connolly says Saturday’s last-gasp goal concession at home to Eglinton sums up their season.

The Jags were on course for their 12th win of the season in the West of Scotland Fourth Division, thanks to goals from Jude Rodger and Mitchell Rooney, but the visitors equalised to snatch a point in the fifth-minute of stoppage time.

It denied Thistle the chance to leapfrog Eglinton into sixth-place in the table and Connolly said:“We lose a goal in the 95th minute after failing to deal with a long throw into the box, and that cost us a couple of points.

“But that has been the story of our season, losing a late goal and a look at the league table tells you that.

“We’ve had eight draws and a number of them have come with late goals against us in winning positions.

“It just sums us up that we have most of the play and give away a sloppy late goal.”

Rooney’s strike took him to 20 goals for the campaign and Connolly added: “It has been a positive first season for Mitchell. He has come in and done well.

“Another goal at the weekend has got him to 20 for the season, which he has been chasing for a wee while now, so I’m sure he’ll be pleased to get to that landmark.”

Thistle now host Argyll and Bute outfit Campbeltown Pupil tonight [Wednesday] before travelling to Rossvale on Saturday.

“We had a tough trip up at Campbeltown earlier in the season[where the Jags won 6-2] and I don’t envy them having to make that journey in a midweek,”said Connolly.

“We’ve got to go and try to win the game and go to Rossvale, who are still in the promotion hunt, so it is two tough games.”
