EK BOSS SEEKS SILVERWARE

Kilby targeting trophy double by Sunday

- PAUL THOMSON

East Kilbride boss Mick Kennedy says the club is a positive place as they look to end the week with two trophies to their name.

After last week’s midweek clash at Civil Service Strollers was postponed, Kilby last night had the chance to claim the point they need to be crowned Lowland League champions when they faced Albion Rovers as the News went to press on Tuesday.

And on Sunday the club are in Lowland League Cup final action when they take on fifth tier rivals Tranent at Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld, kick-off 3pm.

In what could be a hugely successful season, Kilby have also booked their place in the South Challenge Cup final at the end of May after a 2-1 semi-final win at Tranent on Saturday earned them the chance of completing a potential treble.

East Kilbride have not won a treble in their short 14-year history and they will be looking to back up any trophy success with promotion to the SPFL via the pyramid play-offs, which kickoff at the end of this month.

Kennedy said: “We are heading into a massive four-to-six week spell ahead for the club with the play-offs coming up, so we just need to take each game as it comes. The plan would be to have two winners’ medals by the end of the week, but we can’t get too far ahead of ourselves.

“We are in a positive place; close to winning the league and in two finals.

“If you’d told us before the start of the season that this is the position we’d be in at this stage, we’d have been delighted so there’s a lot of positivity around.”

Looking ahead to Sunday’s cup final, Kilby face a familiar foe in Tranent, who they have already met three times this season.

EK suffered a 7-0 humbling in the Scottish Cup in October but have since defeated the East Lothian side in their last two meetings, winning 2-1 in the cup semi on Saturday and 3-2 in a league clash in February. They also meet at Foresters Park in the final league game of this season.

Kennedy added: “The 7-0 game was an unusual one, but the other two games since then have been well-contested and very tight.

“We have managed to come out on top - and deservedly so - on both of the last two occasions.

“But Sunday will bring its own challenges.

“The dynamics of the pitch and the surface will be very different to Tranent’s surface, but we just need to go and impose ourselves on the game and, hopefully, finish it with a cup.”
