Last orders at pub that is a ‘place of refuge and friendship’

A MUCH-LOVED pub in the heart of Ilkeston is set to close its doors for good tonight with a big leaving do.

Regulars at The Needlemakers Arms in Ilkeston shared their sadness after the owners made the shock announcement on Tuesday, May 14.

A short statement released on the pub’s Facebook page read: “Hello everyone, it is with great regret I have to write this post. As you all know the pub was put up for sale. I can now tell you it has been sold so our leaving party will be on Saturday, May 25 and our doors will close on that day.

“I would like to thank everyone who has supported us and for all your loyal custom.”

The pub has been under the ownership of Star Pubs and Bars and had a £200,000 refurbishment in 2018 before the new management took over in 2021.

A spokesperson for the Heinekenowned pub chain said the decision to sell the pub came after reviewing its estate and ensuring it has “the right pubs in the right locations.” The full statement from the chain read: “Like all pub companies, we regularly review our estate to ensure we have the right pubs in the right locations.

“We have earmarked The Needlemakers Arms for sale as part of this process, hence the closing of the pub.”

Ilkeston locals took to Facebook to share their sadness following the announcement of the pub’s closure, which has a 4.5-star rating on Google reviews.

One user commented: “Such a shame. Wishing you all the best for your next chapter.”

Another said: “You will be missed. Such a smashing couple, a place of refuge and friendship and I can’t believe you’re going, I wish you health, wealth and happiness for your future.”

Another user said: “Never thought I’d see the day when The Needles closed its doors for the last time...

“So many friends and memories made here - over 40 years of memories.”

Another added: “It’s a real shame. I wish you all the best.”
