Cows rescued after fire breaks out at barn
COWS had to be rescued from a barn after a large fire broke out at a farm in Ceredigion.
Firefighters spent hours tackling the blaze in the Coed-y-bryn area of Ceredigion, around five miles from Llandysul.
Crews from Newcastle Emlyn, Aberaeron, Llandysul, Tumble and Lampeter were called to the incident at 3.15pm on Tuesday, December 5, and remained at the scene into the night.
The fire was confined to a large barn, while a Bobcat machine and 70 bales of hay were also ablaze. Cows housed inside the barn were able to be moved to safety while the bales were placed in a nearby field and left to smoulder.
There were 20 firefighters battling the fire at one point, using breathing apparatus sets, one main jet, two hose reel jets and one otter pump. Crews were able to extinguish the fire and dampen down the area, before leaving the farm at around 7.15pm.
Nobody was injured in the incident, and Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service has issued a reminder to people who live and work on farms about the importance of safety and the safe storage of farm equipment and items.
A spokesman for the fire service said: “Farms and properties in rural areas can be remote and isolated, which can lead to longer travel distances, longer response times and access issues.
“The service wants to work with farmers and landowners to plan ahead by ensuring your farm fire risk assessment is up to date, developing a Fire Box at the property entrance containing details such as location of water supplies, map land, list of livestock and locations of hazardous materials, avoid storing flammable with vehicles or livestock, and considering whether a fire appliance can reach all areas of your property.”
