Closures and disruption in next phase of road upgrade
THERE will be closures on Milton Road as part of a major upgrade to the busy route.
Sections of the road will be resurfaced in June.
Contractors Milestone will begin raising utility covers and laying new service ducts along the route.
It comes ahead of a fortnight of resurfacing works between Hurst Park Avenue and Birch Close that will require overnight road closures.
The Greater Cambridge Partnership said it is making “good progress” on the Milton Road project and says that when completed later this year, it will deliver new bus lanes and improved walking and cycling links.
It will include the city’s second CYCLOPS (Cycle Optimised Protected Signals) junction in a bid to improve daily journeys in and out of Cambridge.
Thomas Fitzpatrick, GCP’s head of programme, said: “We apologise for any disruption these overnight works will cause to people who live in or travel along Milton Road and thank you for your patience.
“We are making good progress on Milton Road and expect to complete work later this year to make it easier for people to travel by bus, bike or on foot to work, school or to meet their friends.”
■Milton Road overnight closures
The first of the overnight road closures will be between Mitcham’s Corner and Arbury Road from Monday, June 3 between 8pm and 6am.
Once the first section is completed, the section of Milton Road from Arbury Road to King’s Hedges Junction will be closed.
Finally, Mitcham’s Corner to Elizabeth Way Roundabout will be closed to allow works to be completed next to Mitcham’s Corner and Gilbert Road.
Surfacing work on adjacent side roads will also be carried out but this will be limited to the first 30 metres of the affected roads.
The road are: Highworth Avenue,
Elizabeth Way, Oak Tree Avenue, Union Lane, Arbury Road and Birch Close.
During the closures, access will be maintained for residents. Emergency services, pedestrians and cyclists will also be able to travel along Milton Road through the resurfacing works but there will be no access for bus services.
No parking will be allowed where resurfacing is taking place – this includes the layby outside the shops – to enable the work to be carried out.
