- ATHLETICS

THERE were three medals for Burton AC teenagers at the Mason’s Trophy meeting in Stoke, with Ewan Withnall adding another impressive 1500m victory to his growing collection.

Twenty Burton athletes took part in a meeting designed to give the junior and intermediate age groups a chance to hit qualifying standards for the English Schools Championships.

Ten counties were represented at Stoke and the Burton athletes had come through qualifying events with either Derbyshire or Staffordshire schools championships to be there.

Withnall controlled his 1500m race from the start and strode away to win in four minutes 15.02 seconds.

Poppy Howard grabbed a silver medal when she threw a big personal best of 29.22m in the hammer.

And George Kugelmann followed up with silver in the discus with a throw of 36.54m.

Joel Cantrill ran in a 400m mixed relay Derbyshire team which came second.

There was also a win for Tamworth athlete Isla Rogers, with 39.13m in the javelin – she has recently been training in Burton with club chairman Jaime Walker’s throws group.

While there were no other medallists, Jessica Golder (12.95m, 75m hurdles) and Henry Hemmings (2.05.56, 800m) recorded PBS.

BURTON Athletic Club members won several team prizes in the Washlands relays, with a number of young athletes competing strongly against adult runners.

Ewan Withnall was supposed to be taking it easy with his Mason’s Trophy appearance due the next day but his competitive instincts kicked in and he won the individual under-17 prize – although entered as an under-15 – with a run of 9.49 over a 1.9-mile lap, which was also the third-fastest leg of the day.

The under-17 team were also winners,

through Withnall, Lincoln Shaw, Aleksander Tutt and Oliver James and were the eighth-fastest team overall among all the adults.

Similarly, Maisie Trueman ran the third-fastest leg, 11.20, among the women, as she went first for the Burton team, who came second overall with further legs from Isobel Harmon and Charlotte Nettleton.

The under-17 girls’ team prize went to Burton’s Martha Ashton, Amelia Nettleton and Sian Gower and the under-17 mixed team prize to Jacob Harmon, Daniel Perkins, Freddie Hutchinson and, running for a second time, Isobel Harmon.
