A LUCKY bingo player from Burton has won a massive £50,000 jackpot at the town’s Mecca Bingo branch.

The win allows her and her partner to finally move into their first home a year-and-a-half after they got the keys.

Tayla, who wishes to keep her surname anonymous, scooped the jackpot on Sunday, June 2, playing the National Bingo Game with her boyfriend at their local Mecca Bingo, on Middle Yard Leisure Park, where she plays twice a month.

The 26-year-old initially believed she had won the more modest £250 local club prize, and was unaware that by matching all the numbers and claiming ‘house’ within the first 16 numbers being called, she had in fact triggered the huge £50,000 national jackpot.

Tayla said: “I kept nudging my boyfriend saying my ticket was doing well. When I shouted ‘house,’ I thought it was quick but didn’t realise how quick. I was overwhelmed just thinking I’d won the local club prize. When my boyfriend told me it was £50,000, I instantly started crying.

“It was like tunnel vision. Everything went into slow motion, and I remember a big uproar of cheer.

“Five minutes later they called me up on stage with a confetti cannon, and I realised this was actually happening.”

Tayla and her boyfriend bought their house 16 months ago, but have been unable to move in due to various issues including damp and a leaky roof. With the winnings, they plan to fund the necessary renovations, finally move out of her parents’ home, and start a new chapter together.

“Every time we go to the bingo we say if we win let’s fix the leaky roof. Now, it’s actually happened. We’ve already booked for the roof to be repaired. As a treat, we might go on a holiday as well. It just all still doesn’t feel real.’’

Terry Connelly, general manager at Mecca Bingo Burton, said: “We’re always thrilled for our winners, but the £50k National Bingo Game jackpot is a real cause for celebration.

“We’re delighted that Tayla and her boyfriend are now able to move in and make their first house a home together.”

Jackie Richards, caller at Mecca

Bingo Burton, added: “When Tayla realised she had won the jackpot, the atmosphere in the club was absolutely electrifying – I had goosebumps.

“We set off the confetti cannons in celebration and everyone in the room was on their feet applauding the winner. It’s just brilliant to think of everything a young couple can do with that money.”
