Super girl
I was deeply inspired by the story of Hamda Alshkeili, a 22-year-old Emirati Jiu-jitsu athlete who is breaking barriers for people with disabilities (My hearing difficulties do not affect my love for sports’, May 3). Despite facing a hearing impairment, Hamda’s determination and resilience shine through as she prepares to represent the UAE National Team at the 2024 Jiu-jitsu Asian Championship in Abu Dhabi. Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the ability to overcome obstacles, serving as a beacon of hope and inspiration for individuals facing similar challenges. Hamda’s courage and dedication exemplify the spirit of inclusivity and determination, making her a true role model for us all.

Rise and shine
Reading about the struggles of Hamda is not easy (May 3). The challenges faced on a daily basis are something ordinary people cannot even fathom in their wildest dreams. Yet, the determination and grit with which she charges forward in life make it seem so effortless. This week’s cover story, My hearing difficulties do not affect my love for sports, was a huge source of energy and inspiration for me. A warrior she is and will achieve triumph in whatever she does. She continues to prove that anything is possible with passion, perseverance, and a fighting spirit. Good luck, Hamda! You rock and will succeed!

An inspiration
I was moved when I read the cover story (May 3). She is a mentor and a motivational idol! Kudos to her achievements in the world of sports. The victims of this condition have to fight a dual battle—one with themselves and the other with society. This becomes an undeniable fact that is hard to digest and even harder to move on from in our lives. The pre-conceived notions laid down by our society, the prejudice, and discrimination show the narrow-mindedness of people and how people of determination are treated can all be significant challenges. There are many Hamda Alshkeilis out there who are just waiting to open their hearts and spread their wings.

Stronger together
An eye-opening article Men and women need to be allies (May 3), resonated with me. I’ve always felt that I get attached too easily, both to people and places, which has led to emotionally traumatic experiences at times. I’ve also felt that it was easier for other people to detach from relationships we shared than for me. However, I didn’t know that one’s attachment style also goes back to the days when we shared our relationship with our parents. The article helped me understand my own attachment styles better, and I can now work on finding ways to express my needs. I thank wknd. for their dedication to empowering women and realising their potential.

Brand YOU
What a resume does for a candidate applying for a job, a college essay does for a student trying to secure a seat in a university. These written documents are a testimony of the candidate’s life. They are evaluated, and the person is judged based on what they have written in these documents, so why not create a beautiful piece that reflects the brand — “you”? The article ( Your personal statement is all about you, May 3) highlights how important language and the skill of writing are to portray your goals, values, and thoughts to impress and be valued as a significant person based on a written document.
