MATATAG CURRICULUM: FOR A STRONGER FILIPINO YOUTH

- SANDRA G. MARIANO

Education plays a vital role in shaping the minds of the youth and preparing the for the challenges in the near future. Education shapes the minds of our nation’s next builders. Over the years, different approaches and techniques have been employed to enhance the learning experience and students are equipped with necessary skills. We have also undergone different curriculum-from BEC, RBEC, K-12 and now to is the MATATAG CURRICULUM.

As an educator, I am thrilled for the new direction the Department of Education (DepED) is taking with the launch of the MATATAG Curriculum. This innovative and comprehensive agenda aims to address the longstanding problems and challengens in the Philippine Education system and pave the way for a brighter future for our Filipino youth.

The MATATAG curriculum is a comprehensive program that focuses not only on academic excellence but also on character development and resilience. It aims to create a well-rounded individual who can face every obstacle with determination, adaptability, and perseverance. This curriculum recognizes the fact that success in life is not solely determined by academic achievements but also by a strong foundation of values and virtues.

One of the key aspects of the MATATAG curriculum is its emphasis on character education. It instills in students the importance of honesty, integrity, empathy, and respect for others. By teaching them these core values, the curriculum hopes to create responsible and compassionate individuals who can contribute positively to society. This aspect of the curriculum is particularly important in today's world where moral values often seem to take a backseat.

I am particularly excited about the support that the Department will give to teachers in the MATATAG curriculum.

I do hope that the support will not just end by making us attend seminars-it should also be partnered with constant technical assistance, complete instructional materials and conducive learning facilities. Teachers play an important role in the execution of the said curriculum. A curriculum will just stay as a paper but with the help of the teachers, the said paper comes alive and changes lives. By encouraging innovative, responsive and inclusive teaching approaches and providing training on technology integration for remote learning, we can enhance the teaching-learning process and equip educators with tools they need for the so-called “digital age”.

The road ahead will be challenging before MATATAG curriculum can fully pave its way; but I firmly believe that with clear direction, we can overcome the obstacles ahead. The launch of this agenda is not just DepEd’s task alone; it is a call for national commitment and sustained efforts and partnerships from different sectors of the society. As educators, parents, students, administrators and stakeholders, we should all join hands in building a MATATAG nation, where Filipino youth can strive and have a stronger future.
