KP to build 10,000 water tanks, provide subsidized seeds to farmers in Lakki Marwat
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has decided to build 10,000 water storage tanks and install tube wells in Lakki Marwat to promote agriculture in the district.
The government will also provide subsidized seeds to local farmers for cultivating lemons, grapes, orange, date palm, saffron, olives, and peanuts on 100 acres of land. The decision was made at a meeting of the provincial cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, in Peshawar on Thursday.
The meeting reviewed the ongoing projects in the irrigation and agriculture sectors in the southern districts of the province and prepared a plan of action for launching new public sector projects and bringing barren land under cultivation.
The provincial ministers said that emergency measures were being taken to improve the irrigation system and promote agriculture in Lakki Marwat. They said that orchards would be planted on the land in the district as part of these efforts.
The meeting was informed that the government would provide subsidized seeds to farmers. The farmers will also be given special training in this regard. The meeting was further informed that measures would also be taken to increase honey production.
The ministers said that the selection of sites for the construction of 10,000 water storage tanks and the digging of agricultural tube wells in Lakki Marwat would be made by a committee.
They said that work was also underway on a kitchen garden project in the province, under which vegetables would be grown indoors.
The chief minister said that the government considered it its prime responsibility to make the province's land cultivable so that it could become self-sufficient in agriculture and would not have to import wheat and other food items.
