It had also marked the opening of the 2023 Mumbai Film Festival at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre on 27 October.
While initial reviews consider this movie as ‘a cinematic powerhouse’ with a strong emotional core, it also is a pat on the back for Mehta whose skillful direction did bring out the best in Kareena who plays a police officer - Jaspreet Bhamra - grappling with personal loss while handling a high-profile case. Aside from her loveydovey performances in Bollywood masala films, Kareena shows a new side to herself, conveying both, deep vulnerability and strength, thereby keeping audiences emotionally connected throughout.
This film takes up themes such as prejudice, identity, and community, all founded into a compelling narrative that keeps viewers engrossed. It also features Indian celebrity chef Ranveer Brar in a key role, peppered with a few Hindi dialogues. In fact, the film has a blend of English and Hindi dialogues that are easily grasped even if one is not conversant with one of the two languages.
If you hated Kareena for her superficial performance in
Crew, which could’ve sounded the death knell for her career, this mystery thriller might change that perception. And given the fact that she is no more mainstream ‘heroine material’, her diversion into such character driven roles could be good decision to salvage her screen presence, after all.
If you are an avid Kareen fan, you would, indeed, notice similar expressions and mannerisms you have seen before, especially those in Jabwemet (2007), Heroine (2012) and Jaanejaan (2023, Netflix)
A good watch, indeed!
