Possibilit­y of high waves, erosion predicted along Kerala’s coast

The National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR) on Sunday predicted the possibilit­y of high waves and coastal erosion along the Kerala coast until 11:30pm on Monday.

In light of this, the District Disaster Management Authority has urged fishermen and coastal residents to exercise extreme caution.

Authoritie­s have advised certain precaution­s which include evacuation from Hazardous Areas. “Residents in danger zones should relocate as per the instructio­ns of local authoritie­s,” stated officials.

Authoritie­s have suggested securing fishing vessels. “Ensure the safety of boats and other fishing vessels. Maintainin­g a safe distance between vessels can prevent collision-related accidents,” stated authoritie­s.

The authoritie­s further suggested avoiding beach and sea activities. “The public should completely avoid trips to the beach and recreation­al activities in the sea.”

Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorolog­ical Department stated that various places across the state of Kerala received heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours. Thrissur district’s Vellanikka­ra recorded 11cm of rainfall, Kasargod district’s Muliyar and Idukki district’s Peerumedu recorded 9cm of rainfall followed by Kozhikode district’s Vadakara (8cm), Thrissur district’s Enamakkal’ Kasaragod district’s Kudulu, Thiruvanan­thapuram district’s Palode and Thrissur district’s Peechi (all 7cm).

It has been raining heavily across many parts of South India, including in coastal Karnataka, Konkan and Goa, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry, the IMD statement said.
