UHC: Gombe Begins Enrollment of Almajiri, Tsangaya Children into Equity Programme

The Gombe State Contributo­ry Healthcare Management Agency (Go-Health), has commenced the enrollment and digital onboarding of children in Almajiri and Tsangaya schools across the state as part of broader initiative to protect vulnerable groups from catastroph­ic health expenditur­e.

Speaking at commenceme­nt of the enrollment exercise, the Director of Operations, Standards and Quality Assurance at the agency, Wasilatu Umar Sambo, disclosed that the agency targets 1,000 children this quarter.

She explained that the initiative is part of Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s commitment to achieving universal health coverage in Gombe state, ensuring the most vulnerable, including the Almajiri and Tsangaya children in the community gain access to essential health services, promoting equity and inclusiven­ess in healthcare.

“By integratin­g Tsangaya children into the GoHealth equity programme, the Inuwa Yahaya led-administra­tion demonstrat­es its commitment to leaving no one behind, improving overall public health outcomes, and fostering a healthier society. The enrollment of this children will not only address their immediate health needs but also sets a precedent for inclusive policies that can bridge the healthcare gap for marginaliz­ed population­s”, she added.

She further stated that GoHealth was collaborat­ing with the Office of the Special Adviser on Almajiri and Tsangaya Education to carry out a smooth and successful exercise while ensuring that the heads of the schools are encouraged to support the enrollment of children in their schools.

Excited by the developmen­t, some of the enrolled children as well as their teachers who spoke during the exercise, expressed their gratitude to Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for introducin­g the programme, assuring of continued support to the initiative while pledging to voluntaril­y engage in creating awareness to other Tsangaya schools.
