Rep visits Buhari, seeks support for Nnamdi Kanu’s release

- From Tijjani Ibrahim, Katsina

Obi Aguocha, the lawmaker representing Ikwuano/ Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency, Abia State, has visited former President Muhammadu Buhari at his Daura country home to seek his intervention in the moves to secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) through political channels.

Aguocha’s visit was said to aim at initiating dialogue towards a political solution to

Kanu’s prolonged detention.

Kanu, who was arrested and brought back to Nigeria from Kenya in July 2021 while Buhari was in charge of the country’s affairs, has been in detention since fleeing the country following a military raid on his home. He faces multiple charges, including treason.

Sharing more details on the meeting between the lawmaker and the former president, a statement from Aguocha’s media team on Sunday quoted the lawmaker apologising to Buhari for past grievances involving Kanu, stating, “For the missteps, utterances, and ill gestures of the past, especially on the part of my constituent and brother, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, I am deeply sorry.”

Aguocha emphasised the potential of a political resolution to address grievances and foster unity within Nigeria.

The statement also highlighted Buhari’s commendation of Aguocha’s approach and assurance of his support.

Recently, Aguocha led 50 members of the House of Representatives in appealing to President Bola Tinubu to direct the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fegbemi, to explore legal pathways under the constitution and relevant laws to achieve Kanu’s release.

“This meeting with Buhari is part of a broader initiative to swiftly resolve the issues surrounding Nnamdi Kanu’s detention and trial through dialogue and non-contentious approaches,” the statement further read.

Aguocha stressed Kanu’s readiness to contribute positively towards national unity and development.
