The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has charged members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State and the South South to work hard ahead of the September 21, governorship election in the state, saying the election is a must win for the party.

Akpabio spoke yesterday during the APC South South stakeholders’ meeting held in Calabar, Cross River State.

Daily Trust reports that Edo State is currently under the control of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with Godwin Obaseki as governor. However, Obaseki is serving his second term which will soon elapse.

Akpabio said, “For those of you from Edo State and any part of the South South region, the election that is coming up in September, 2024; you all must head towards Edo both in prayers and everything we have because we are going to defeat Obaseki.”

Akpabio assured the APC governorship candidate for the Edo election, Senator

Monday Okpebholo, that victory would be his.

He said, “Our brother, Senator Monday, you are not just the hope of Edo, but you are the hope of the APC in

the South South zone. We will support you to succeed.

“Your Excellency, Governor Otu, your days of loneliness are over. Today, we have a governor in Cross

River State who is showing direction in terms of performance. It’s not about talk, it’s about what you are able to do. The people will only judge you by what you

put on ground.”

Nigeria’s greatness lies in credible elections – Obi

Meanwhile, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, Mr Peter Obi, has said that Nigeria’s greatness lay in free, fair and credible elections.

Obi stated this at the weekend when he led the Edo State governorship candidate of the LP, Olumide Akpata (SAN), on a courtesy visit on the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, to seek his blessing ahead of the September 21, governorship election in the state.

Obi, who commended the monarch for his fatherly role, said, “Nigeria can only be great if there are free, fair and credible elections.”

He expressed optimism that with the oba’s prayer, LP would defeat other parties in the election to clinch the governorship.

Responding, Ewuare II wished the LP well as they took their political campaigns across the state.
