Indian Youtuber steals limelight at Cannes

- BY S.TAMARAI CHELVI

Indian YouTuber literally stole the limelight from Bollywood glitterati at the recent Cannes Film Festival. With it being one of the top international film festivals on the movie industry calendar, A-listers and famous stars of the silver screen paraded in the season’s finest threads as they sashayed down the red carpet.

But this year, the papparazzi cameras were firmly trained on a humble Indian lass by the name of Nancy Tyagi. Not an actress per se but a social media influencer from India who stunned Cannes-followers when she walked down the red carpet with an exquisite pink ruffle dress. What really got social media abuzz was the fact that the dress was homemade!

Unlike other Bollywood stars who opted for big name labels or over-the-top designs for their red carpet moment, Nancy wowed everyone with a dress that was regal and elegant in its simplicity which she crafted from scratch.

Nancy took 30 days to make the glamorous ball gown-style dress.

On the second day of the festival, she turned up in a shimmery lilac with intricate hand embroidery and sequins and paired with unique hoodie, in the same material.

The influencer who has a million followers on Instagram shared the process of making the saree on her Youtube channel, starting with rickshaw rides to small fabric shops to source for the right materials.

In the videos, Nancy is seen making various dresses of her own design using a vintage hand-cranked sewing machine (though she does also use more modern sewing apparatus to create some of her dresses). She also shares many tips such as cutting and sewing techniques, which resulted in the finished products.

A truly amazing and inspirational journey highlighting the DIY ethic that shone at Cannes!
