Students to join journo day programme

-

KUALA LUMPUR: The fourth edition of the National Journalists’ Day in 2024 will involve communication students for the first time, through the “Jelajah Siswa” programme.

Bernama CEO Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin said the programme is being organised to expose the students to the media and journalism industry.

“The programme will cover six zones, including Sabah, Sarawak, Northern, Eastern, Southern and Central (Peninsular) Malaysia, with the launch ceremony slated to be graced by Communications Minister Fahmi

Fadzil on May 24.

“During the programme, two main topics would be given to the students, namely Fact Check and Mobile Journalism, which would mould them into an all-rounder journalist,” she said during a talk show, Apa Khabar Malaysia on Bernama TV.

Nur-ul Afida, who is also the chairperson of the event, said the students will be given high-capacity desktop computers and a television set to use during the programme.

The celebration of the event, which will occur in Kuching, Sarawak, was brought forward to May 25 and will continue until May 27. The actual date of the National Journalists’ Day is on May 29.

“The date of the celebration had to be brought forward because May 29 is too close to the Gawai Dayak festival, which celebrated in Sarawak on June 1.

“The Communications Ministry is the implementing agency for the event this year, Bernama has lined up various activities and others events for the National Journalists’ Day. The celebration will not only end in Sarawak, but it will continue throughout Peninsular Malaysia.” Nur-ul Afida said the celebration will kick off with the International Media Conference, organised by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit, and a dinner hosted by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg for media practitioners.

The highlight of the celebration will be on May 27 and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to attend the event, which was introduced in 2018.

The celebration of the event is a platform for media practitioners to gather and discuss current issues faced by the industry.
