Clip of man assaulting RTD officer not new, say police
A video that went viral on Tuesday showing a man assaulting a Road Transport Department enforcement officer was actually captured in November last year.
The perpetrator, in fact, had been slapped with a one-day jail sentence and a RM4,000 fine.
Kedah RTD director Aman Shah Hashim said investigations into the video found that the incident happened near Jalan Taman Tasik Darul Aman in Jitra at 4.04pm on Nov 22.
He said the one-minute and 24-second video showed a Nissan Vanette driver refusing to stop when flagged down by an RTD officer for inspection.
“In the video, the driver is seen eventually stopping his vehicle in Jalan Tasik Darul Aman in Jitra, and berating the RTD officer on duty, using offensive language and provocation.
“At the time of the incident, the officer was conducting enforcement patrols and identified a suspicious vehicle.
“Initial checks showed three violations related to the vehicle — an expired licence, no insurance coverage and an expired Puspakom inspection certificate.
“The vehicle was directed to stop, but the driver refused to cooperate.
“When the vehicle stopped, the individual committed a criminal act of violence and obstructed a public servant from performing his duties,” Aman Shah said in a statement yesterday.
He said following the incident, a police report was filed by the RTD officer.
He added that the individual, a 24-year-old sugarcane juice vendor, was detained by police and charged in the Jitra magistrate’s court under Section 353 of the Penal Code on Nov 27.
“The man served his sentence after the court imposed a oneday jail term from the conviction date and a fine of RM4,000.”
Aman Shah reminded the public not to share videos without verifying their authenticity.
“Such videos can tarnish the image of public service and hinder civil servants from carrying out their duties as stipulated by the law.”
