DRIVING LICENCE, ROAD TAX RENEWAL GO DIGITAL
MyJPJ app initiative only open to Malaysian citizens, says Loke
STARTING Feb 1, Malaysians can renew their driving licence and road tax using the Road Transport Department’s (RTD) MyJPJ application.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said those who opted for a digital driving licence up to last Sunday would get a rebate of RM5 upon renewal.
He said the new function would make it easier for the public to renew their driving licence and road tax digitally, saving time and cost besides reducing the congestion of physical transactions at RTD counters.
“This initiative is only for Malaysian citizens and does not apply to foreign nationals or any pass, long-term permit, MyKAS Card or MyPR Card holders,” he told reporters after a working visit to the Selangor RTD headquarters, yesterday.
Loke said that based on a study conducted last year, the department found an increase in the number of drivers and vehicle owners who opted for digital platforms.
He said, up to last Sunday, a total of 7.5 million users downloaded the MyJPJ app since it was launched in February last year.
Meanwhile, Loke said that drivers and vehicle owners who are not yet ready during the interim digitisation period this year can still choose a physical driving licence and road tax.
“For adjustment purposes in the interim period, the RTD will issue a new and standardised physical driving licence and road tax in the form of a security paper.
“Previously, the driving licence was in the form of a plastic card, while the road tax was in the form of a disc sticker,” he said, adding that the use of the security paper would begin after the existing stock of plastic cards for driving licences and disc stickers for road tax ran out.
Loke added that the new road tax slip need not be attached or displayed on the vehicle windscreen, as previously required by Section 20(1) of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987.
“This road tax security slip is not mandatory and aims to give time to those who still need to adapt to the digital system.”
Loke, however, reiterated that enforcement action would be carried out against any party driving a vehicle without a valid driving licence and road tax.
