Gallant Gorey the champs

-

GOREY CRICKET Club competed against Leinster 5, an established club rich in tradition, in the T20 Ed Sports Russell Court Trophy final held recently in the propitious confines of Railway Union.

Supporters from Gorey arriving by bus and car outnumbered their foes, and Leinster, winning the toss, elected to bat.

Scoring a creditable 162 runs, Gorey, under the calm guidance of captain Pradeep, set about their task methodically and determinedly in the second innings.

The strong opening pair of Anslem and Razwan secured 52 runs between them, followed by Yasith and Shifan’s 96 runs as morale-dispirited Leinster crumbled.

Meena Baskarasubra of CL complimented both teams and officials on their sportsmanship and presented the trophy to the gallant Gorey CC victors.

In attendance were Gorey CC President Rob Millard, Chairperson AL FitzGerald, and Trustee Vincent Murphy, thrilled to witness Gorey cricket’s growth.

The club acknowledges the tireless efforts of present and past members and committee, the support of the Council and political figures, Courtown Hibs AFC, where our matches are played, Ron Breen, groundskeeper, and the schools in the region.

This endeavour would not be possible without those above and many more, and may it continue to prosper.

All focus is now on winning the league, which will conclude shortly, but in the meantime, we congratulate our heroic team.

Wexford Wanderers Cricket Club also had a busy weekend with three matches across two days, yielding a mix of triumphs and challenges.

The third team hosted Adamstown’s fourth XI at home on Saturday. Wexford opted to bat first after winning the toss, but their innings struggled, managing only 94 runs all out. Joby Jose stood out with a resilient 32.

Despite the low total, Wexford’s bowlers delivered a stellar performance, backed by sharp fielding.

Bishnu Bartuala led the charge, taking three wickets, as they bowled Adamstown out for just 76, securing an 18-run victory.

Sunday saw both the first and second teams playing away games. The first team faced a tough challenge against Adamstown’s first XI, who posted an imposing 266 all out.

James Harmse was the pick of the bowlers, claiming three wickets. However, Wexford’s response faltered, and they were bowled out for 107, suffering a 159-run defeat.

Meanwhile, the second team played Phoenix’s fifth XI at Phoenix Park in Dublin. After a shaky start, losing two wickets for just five runs, Wexford fought back admirably.

Joby Jose, continuing his fine form, scored a magnificent century, supported by Alan Murphy in a crucial 113-run partnership.

Jimmy Jose contributed a quick 48, helping Wexford to a competitive total of 220.

However, Phoenix, true to their name, recovered from early trouble to chase down the target with six wickets in hand.
