1 THE PHIL MURPHY WEEKEND: It’s that time of year once again when some of the most talented musicians from around Ireland and the world descend on the historic seaside village of Carrig on Bannow for the Phil Murphy Weekend.

Now in it’s 32nd year, this year’s festival will see performanc­es from such trad and folk luminaries as Teddy Thompson (son of legendary folk musicians Richard and Linda Thompson), legendary uilleann piper Paddy Keenan, Kevin Burke, Tulua, The Kilkennys, Garadice, Daithí Gormley & Elaine Reilly and The Irish Ghosts.

A whole host of other musicians from as far away as the US and even Argentina will perform over the course of the four days from Thursday to Sunday, with various music workshops and sessions taking place around the village too.

2 RÍ RÁ FESTIVAL OF CHILDREN’S ART: Rí Rá Festival of Children’s Arts is delighted to present SHHH...! at The Presentati­on Arts Centre, Enniscorth­y. SHHH…! By Compania A Tope (Argentina) is the onomatopoe­ia that silences the word, but cannot silence body language. Lilah and Pirucho are two characters who communicat­e with their bodies through acrobatics and pantomime, to share with the audience an universal world, full of absurd and amazing circus feats!

The performanc­e will take place on Friday July 26 at 5pm. This is a free event, but advance booking is required as tickets are quickly being snapped up. There are also a number of events taking place across the town – just check out the website!

3 TULLOGHER/ ROSBERCON VINTAGE SHOW AND FIELD DAY: The field day starts at 12 noon at Rosbercon Parish Centre. All old time farm machinery welcome. Events will include fun fair, children’s entertainm­ent, food and gift stalls, wheel of fortune, underage hurling and camogie and other numerous events. This is a great day out for all the family with so much to see with plenty of displays and vintage vehicles on show.

4 THE PLAYBOY OF THE WESTERN WORLD: Gorey Little Theatre will present the Playboy of the Western World at Gorey Little Theatre every Tuesday and Thursday during the month of August. Directed by Stephen Acton, the first show will take place on Thursday, August 1. Doors will open at 7:15p.m. and the show will start at 8p.m. Tickets cost €15 plus booking fee. The Playboy of the Western World is a three-act play written by Irish playwright by John Millington Synge.

5 RED PRES REDEPMPTIO­N II CONCERT: Dragging garage rock kicking and screaming to all new lows: Peer Pleasure consists of Brandon Murphy, Cein O’Dowd, Erik Murphy, Fiachra Carey, Jack Joyce, Jeff Miller, Joel Pitcher, Oisin Conroy and Joseph O’Gorman. Formed in 2021 as a lockdown project and active since March 2022, they are returning to the Presentati­on Arts Centre stage on Saturday July 27. The Donnys are an exciting vibrant five piece rock and roll experience born and bred in Kilkenny, while Bad Mothers Union was also establishe­d there in 2003. Juniper Hallow are a five piece upand-coming band from Enniscorth­y and Arklow with a wide range of influences, though they primarily play alternativ­e rock. The concert begins at 8pm and the tickets are €10.

6 CASTLEBRID­GE SHOW: Taking place slightly earlier this year as a result of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, the annual Castlebrid­ge Horticultu­ral and Agricultur­al Show will be held this Sunday, July 28.

Always a great family day out, the show offers a little bit of something for everyone with all manner of stalls and stands, i ncluding a bottle stall from Shelmalier­s GAA Club and bric- abrac from Bart’s Cancer Charity Shop. The dog show i s always hugely popular and this year i s sponsored by Dec’s Pets, while there will also be a Pet’s Corner by Blackwater Open Farm.

The day will also see lots of refreshmen­ts, food and drink, and prizes for the best dressed lady and gentlemen, a glamorous granny competitio­n and a kid’s fancy dress parade. St Patrick’s Fife and Drum Band will also be i n attendance on the day.

7 HARRY POTTER’S BIRTHDAY: Children between 7 to 12 years old are invited to attend Harry Potter’s birthday party at Gorey Library at 3p.m. on Wednesday, July 31. There will be lots of magical activity at the party including witch and wizard training. Guests are invited to wear costumes according to the house they belong to. Each child will then craft their own magical items that they will need to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Places are limited, and booking is recommende­d to ensure your seat.
