Hunt under way for two suspects after sex assault in Dublin city

Gardaí are hunting two men following a serious sexual assault on a French woman in Dublin at the weekend.

The suspected random assault happened in the south-inner city in the early hours of Saturday, and an investigat­ion is under way to identify the attackers.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident on John Dillon Street in the Liberties.

The victim, who is understood to be a French national, had just been dropped off by a taxi and was walking in the area when she was approached by two males.

She was then subjected to a serious sexual assault.

No arrests have yet been made, but the inquiry is being led by detectives who specialise in investigat­ing sexual assaults.

Gardaí from the Divisional Protective Services Unit (DPSU) are heading the investigat­ion.

As part of the inquiry, gardaí have been collecting CCTV footage from the area and speaking with local residents.

One source said: “Significan­t resources are being put into this very serious incident, including the DPSU, while other frontline personnel are being brought in to carry out further inquiries.

“That particular location and the surroundin­g area is covered by a large amount of CCTV, which is being gathered and carefully analysed to assist in identifyin­g the suspects.”

Gardaí have also appealed for anyone with informatio­n in relation to the incident to contact them.

In a statement at the weekend, a spokespers­on said: “Gardaí are investigat­ing an alleged assault which may have occurred in the vicinity of John Dillon Street, Dublin 8, in the early hours of this morning, Saturday, August 24, 2024.

“Gardaí are appealing to any persons who may have been in or around this area between the hours of 3am and 7am, who may have witnessed anything out of the ordinary or has camera footage including from dash-cam.

“Anyone who has any informatio­n is asked to contact Kevin Street garda station on 01-6669400, the Garda Confidenti­al line at 1800 666 111 or any garda station.”
