CITY FOLK PREFER THE BEER AND NOW

IRISH urban dwellers like more beer, cocktails, and cider, while rural residents prefer spirits, wine and soft drinks, a study reveals.

Research by social trends firm CGA by NIQ found people in cities here also prefer brunch and late-night venues, while country folk favour food-led venues.

Towns and cities tend to have younger population­s, have more expendable income, and spend more on leisure.

More than half of them visit pubs, clubs, and restaurant­s at least once a week.

Rural residents tend to stick to gastro pubs and casual dining restaurant­s, according to the study.

The researcher­s claimed the findings reveal the distinct difference­s in consumer behaviour and choices in terms of age and location.

This helps on-premise businesses like pubs, clubs, and restaurant­s to better understand their target audience, according to the study.

It claims the research highlights insights into consumer engagement, purchasing decisions, and consumer behaviour.

A spokespers­on said: “The insight reveals distinct consumer behaviours, preference­s, and motivation­s in towns and cities compared to rural and suburban areas.

“Town and city consumers are generally younger, with almost half (45 per cent) falling within the 18 to 34 age range.

“In addition, this segment generally commands a higher average income and spends an average of €157 monthly on the on-premise, compared to €135 in suburban and rural areas.

“Conversely, suburban and rural regions account for a larger proportion of older consumers.

“Some 42 per cent are aged 35 to 54 and 30 per cent are aged over 55. This suggests consumers are more likely to migrate to less densely populated areas as they age.

“This underlines the need for on-premise industry stakeholde­rs to adapt their offerings to retain engagement as lifestyles evolve.”
