Dan backs pal Kellie to deliver

are very good friends actually, which maybe a lot of people didn’t know. I can’t wait to watch her fight, I’ve watched every single round so far. She is on quite late, 11 o’clock (French time).

“I was talking to her this morning, she was loving the gold medal – I was showing her it and everything. She’s ready for it, I’m sure she’s going to put on a show and show how world class she is.

“She’s unmatched. I don’t really watch much boxing, but I watch her fight every time and she is levels way above her opponents.”

Wiffen, 23, was speaking at the Parade of Champions at the Trocadero Gardens with a host of other medal winners.

He joked that it was “kind of weird” how he became firm friends with his pals. “We were on the ‘Late, Late Show’ together and we were just kind of laughing the whole time there, we just got a bit friendly.

“To be honest it’s the same in all sports, I mean the rowers are here today, I was chatting to them – they were doing the phones (gesture that Wiffen does coming out of the pool) going through the rowing, so the whole of Team Ireland is just this one team, it really feels like it.

“Everybody watches each other, when we see each other in the morning we say good morning, everybody knows when each other’s racing – it’s such a great team to be part of.

Gymnast Rhys Mcclenaghan, who won pommel horse gold on Saturday, is hoping to get to the fight.

“I’m trying to,” he said, while bronze medal winning swimmer Mona Mcsharry said she had tried to get a ticket but it was sold out.

“I don’t remember talking to her a lot at the last Olympics just because of Covid and everything.

“But Ellen (Keane) and I have spent a little bit of time talking to her at this Olympics. And she’s honestly great. I am really excited.”
