You can get enamel paint that you can apply yourself over the existing enamel. You can get it from most DIY stores. Blackfriar manufactures a quality enamel paint. Q
How do I remove marks on my granite hearth made by hot ash spilling out of the wood burning stove? Eddy Man, via email
Ash leaves a sooty oily stain, so for a chemical cleaner I’d use Lithofin WEXA which is a multi-purpose cleaner that removes soot, oil and grease. If the marble is damaged below the surface, use a burnishing paste to polish off a thin layer of the marble. Q

Masonry paint is for walls and not durable enough for steps. Scrape and sand back the paint, rinse and dry. Then apply epoxy floor paint which is extremely hard wearing.
ATo clean black mould from indoor window frames, soak cotton wool in bleach and place it on mould overnight. Hey presto, it’s gone. Brian Greatrex, via email
What’s the best way to clean untreated bare decking? It gets extremely slippery when wet but is in good condition.
Karen Prichard, via email
Wait until it’s a rainy day so all the slime on the wood is soft and simply wash with warm soapy water and a stiff bristle brush, then rinse. Can you recommend a cleaner for a red composite front door, which has a whitish bloom? David Davis, via email
This is the composite material losing its pigment due to weathering. I find the best solution is T-cut burnishing paste, as used on cars. You’ll find it branches of Halfords.
