Student of National Law University found dead in hostel room

A 20- YEAR- OLD student at the National Law University ( NLU) in Delhi allegedly died by suicide on Monday, police said.

The body of the third- year LLB student was found in her hostel room on Tuesday afternoon, they said, adding that they found a suicide note near the body.

Additional DCP ( Dwarka) Nishant Gupta said the woman from Chennai was allegedly tensed over her studies and had spoken of her suicidal thoughts to her roommates in April. “Her roommates had informed her family about the issue and they had taken her to Chennai for a week,” said DCP Gupta.

“She left a suicide note stating that she doesn’t blame anyone for her decision. She also apologised to her parents for taking the extreme step,” said a police officer.

Reacting to the i ncident, National Law University said via a statement: “We mourn the untimely loss of one of our students and extend our heartfelt condolence­s to family and friends during this difficult time. The well- being of every student i n the university i s the paramount and most important factor, and NLU Delhi undertakes every step in this regard. May her Soul rest in peace.”

The woman’s parents came to collect her body from the mortuary after her post- mortem, which was conducted on Thursday.

Her family said she was sharp, studious and intelligen­t.

In another incident, a 20year- old student was found dead in his room in a Laxmi Nagar PG on Thursday. The man, a resident of Charkhi Dadri in Haryana, had recently passed the Common Law Admission Test ( CLAT) and secured admission to NLU.

The next day when the PG owner attempted to contact him and received no response, he grew concerned. The owner told police that the man’s father was notified before he broke open the door to find him lying in his bed, unresponsi­ve.

Police said he died by suicide by inhaling nitrogen gas. “The air conditione­r in the room was running and there were no signs of struggle. We believe the student died by suicide by inhaling nitrogen gas. The crime team inspected the scene and inquest proceeding­s are underway. No foul play is suspected so far,” said DCP ( East), Apoorva Gupta.

The DCP added that the student’s admission to NLU is yet to be verified.
