Jabalpur airport: Part of canopy at new terminal caves in, no one injured

THE PORTION of a canopy of the new terminal building of Jabalpur airport in Madhya Pradesh caved in and fell on a car after heavy rainfall Thursday.

The damaged car belongs to an Income Tax official. No one was injured in the incident as the driver left after parking the vehicle in the porch outside the main gate of the terminal building.

The airport authority has launched an investigat­ion into the incident. State Public Works Minister Rakesh Singh said that “an accident at the airport has been reported and an investigat­ion is underway to prevent such incidents in the future.” According to officials, amid heavy rain, water began accumulati­ng which increased the weight of the canopy’s tent and caused the iron tent section to fall on the car.

A senior official said “the building is newly- constructe­d and has experience­d its first rain. The investigat­ion will determine any technical faults, and the project in-charge of this building is also being consulted.”

As per a PIB release, the upgradatio­n work at the airport includes constructi­on of New Terminal Building, ATC Tower, Technical Block, Fire Station Category VII, other buildings and Extension of runway & associated works to cater the operations of AB-320 type of aircraft.
