POLICE HAVE nabbed a notori- ous burglar for his alleged in- volvement in over 33 cases across Delhi and Uttar Pradesh in the past two decades, officers said on Tuesday. Mohammad Akram (45), a resident of Nizamuddin and a part-time mason by profession, has been a wanted criminal since 2004.

Recently, a team of officials from the Civil Lines police station, North Delhi, intensified a search for the accused after four cases of burglary in the area remained unsolved, with the first incident dating back to December 2023, police said.

On June 2, the Civil Lines police received a PCR call about a burglary at a house in the area. The next night, they received a similar complaint and a team was formed to nab the accused. The police team analysed footage from over 50 cctv cameras in the area and identified Akram. Acting on a tip-off, the police team laid a trap and arrested Akram near Tikona Park. “During questioning, he (Akram) claimed that he committed multiple burglaries in the Civil Lines area and other areas of Delhi; he sold the stolen items to an accomplice,” said DCP (North) Manoj Kumar Meena.

The co-accused — Sheikh Khalid Mehmood — is a dealer of gold, diamond, and semi-precious stones at Lajpat Nagar. Mehmood was arrested during a police raid and the stolen items, including a gold-plated charan paduka and a necklace made of green semi-precious stones, were recovered from his possession. Police have seized a smartphone, Rs 3,500 in cash, and tools and clothes from the possession of Akram, officers said.
