Mother, daughter duo rearrested
In 2017, a woman died during an illegal abortion in the Harsul area. Savita Sominath Thorat (43) and her daughter Sakshi were implicated, with Sakshi released as she was a minor at the time. Currently, Sakshi (19) is a student at a polytechnic college in the city. However, it has been revealed that she is involved in an illegal sex-determination racket operating in the city.
The Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation (CSMC) and the Pundliknagar police busted an illegal sex-determination centre in the Deogiri Apartment in Garkheda area on Sunday. In this centre, the police arrested Savita, Sakshi, Sadashiv Ashok Kakade (Phulambri), Dharmaraj Bhausaheb Natkar (Pune), Krishna Subhash Natkar (Nakshatrawadi) red-handed while operating the centre illegally.
PI Rajesh Yadav presented all the accused before the court on Monday. The police have suspected that a link of a major racket of sex-determination tests is being operated in the city and Savita and Sakshi are just a small part of the racket. Hence, the public prosecutor demanded that the accused should be remanded in police custody so that the police can investigate who are the other accused in the racket, who is the kingpin, who are the agents and the customers and other issues. Following which, the accused have been remanded in police custody till May 17.
A case was registered with the Begumpura police station that a woman had died as a buffalo had kicked her in 2017. However, during the investigation it was found that she had died due to excessive bleeding during the illegal abortion.
Dr Shamlal Jaiswal and Savita were arrested by the police. Sakhi had threatened the family members of the deceased that they should tell the police that the woman died as a buffalo had kicked her. As Sakshi was a minor, she was not arrested in this case. But, now it has been found that she has been active in the sex-determination racket again.
