City company owner arrested in 4-year-old case of fake invoices

- VISHAL SINGH / MUMBAI

The proprietor-director of a Megamet Steel Pvt Ltd, Nitin Kagzi, has been arrested for allegedly fabricating invoices for the firm’s goods (bitumen in this case), thereby causing a loss of Rs33.66 lakh to a Nagpur firm. Kagzi is also accused of filing a false case before the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) in the matter. Also accused in the case are two Megamet employees, Darshan Mehta and Bhaskar Mehta.

As per the Marine Drive police, the complainant, Mohsin Khan, 32, is accounts manager at the head office of Supreme Group of Companies in Nagpur.

The firm operates subsidiaries, including Supreme Bitchem Pvt Ltd. (dealing in chemical products), Supreme StarTech Pvt Ltd (specialising in dye chemicals), Supreme Urban Realty Pvt Ltd (focused on construction), and CQRA.

As per Khan, the Mehtas, in early 2017, visited their firm’s office and inquired about the company’s need for bitumen. After a proposal was placed, Supreme Bituchem and Supreme StarTech began procuring bitumen raw materials from Megamet. Khan said the purchase orders and payment details were consistently recorded in the company’s ledger account and orders were emailed to Megamet. Additionally,

discussions occurred with Kagzi and Mehtas on phone. The payments were made directly to Megamet accounts.

Kagzi told the Supreme Group that it owed him Rs33.66 lakh for supplied bitumen, but the latter refuted the claims and presented transactions, alleging that the bills and invoices for the demanded dues were forged. Kagzi then filed a false complaint against the Supreme Group in NCLT. The Supreme Group filed a complaint at the Marine Drive police station in the matter in 2019. A police officer said that despite multiple notices, Kagzi did not attend the interrogation.
