NCP MP Amol Kolhe criticises CM Shinde over onion export ban
Amol Kolhe, an NCP MP, voiced strong criticism against the Maharashtra government led by Eknath Shinde for its alleged inaction in urging the Centre to revoke the ban on onion exports.
Speaking at a gathering in Khadki, organised as part of the 'Shetkari Akrosh Morcha' by the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition, Kolhe emphasised the government's failure to support farmers' concerns.
Addressing the issue, Kolhe highlighted that despite the government's claims of prioritising farmers, there had been no substantial effort from the state leadership, including the deputy chief ministers, to challenge the ban on onion exports imposed by the Centre until March 31, 2024.
This export restriction aimed to stabilise onion prices and bolster domestic availability.
Expressing dismay, Kolhe underscored the adverse impact of the export ban, causing significant financial losses amounting to approximately Rs 1,200 crore for onion growers.
He critiqued the state's inability to advocate for reconsideration of the ban, labeling the government's stance as hesitant and lacking in firmness.
In a veiled reference to Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Kolhe indirectly alluded to the recent political developments in Maharashtra, where those at the helm had championed their actions in the name of progress.
Ajit Pawar, leading a separate faction of the NCP, had previously announced intentions to contest from Shirur and secure victory over Kolhe in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Highlighting the complexities within the NCP, Kolhe's commentary brought attention to his stance and affiliations, having attended Ajit Pawar's swearing-in while remaining aligned with NCP President Sharad Pawar following the party's internal divisions.
