Former chief secretary loses ₹32K in credit card fraud

: Former UP chief secretary Alok Ranjan fell victim to a credit card scam and lost approximat­ely USD 383 (around INR 32,000). The incident took place on July 8 and Gomti Nagar police registered a case on the complaint given by the Ranjan.

According to the complaint, cyber fraudsters withdrew USD 383 through his credit card fraudulent­ly about which he came to know when he received a debit transactio­n message.

As per the police, Ranjan got a call at around 12 noon regarding the outstandin­g bill of a government bank credit card. The caller introduced himself as an employee of the bank saying there is an outstandin­g amount of Rs 1.09 lakh against the complainan­t’s credit card.

“When the caller told my wrong credit card number, I interrupte­d him. At this, the caller asked me to press 9 on the mobile and I followed his instructio­ns. After it, the caller disconnect­ed asking me to contact the bank. Later, at 6.30 pm, a transactio­n message came on my mobile about USD 383 being withdrawn from the account,” he said in his complaint.

Woman loses over 13L in ‘digital arrest’, gets it back with cops’ help

A woman was cheated of Rs. 13,73,653 by unknown cyber criminals posing as CBI officers.

However, the victim informed cyber police station after which swift action helped her get 100% refund of the amount. “Cyber criminals called, Indira Nagar resident Manvi Mehrotra, telling her that her name had cropped up in a money laundering case. The men also sent an arrest warrant, posing as CBI officers and kept the woman in ‘digital house arrest’ in the name of investigat­ion,” said Brijesh Kumar Yadav, SHO, cyber-crime police station. Later a case was registered on June 25 under IPC 419 and 420 and 66D of IT Act.

“Within two weeks, the entire amount taken by fraudsters was recovered by cyber cops,” the SHO added.

In city to take exam, woman assaulted by friend, his aides

A woman, 26, who had come to Lucknow from Sant Kabir Nagar to take a competitiv­e exam, was molested by her male friend and his aides in Gudumba.

The girl had visited the city on July 6 and stayed at the room of her friend, Virendra Mishra.

On July 7, she wrote the last paper of the exam and returned to the room only to find Virendra and his friends consuming liquor. “While I went to another room, Virendra came there after a while and started beating me unprovoked. He stuffed a cloth in my mouth so that I could not call for help. They held me hostage for four hours and kept beating me. Somehow, I managed to close the doors from inside to save myself,” she said.

She said that the duo undressed her forcibly and also made a video in the presence of his other friends, Aman, Satish and Dhanne. Later, she managed to dial the police control room.

SHO, Gudumba, NK Srivastava, said that police lodged an FIR on July 9 and arrested Virendra on Thursday.

Man kills brother

A man allegedly stabbed his younger brother to death during an altercatio­n on Wednesday night. The incident took place in Hasanganj Bavli Chowki under Saadatganj police station .

The critically injured man was rushed to the hospital by family members where he died during treatment, said police.

According to the police, late on Wednesday night, Faisal (19) and his elder brother Ikhlaq had a fight and Ikhlaq stabbed Faisal in the stomach.
