Atlas Cycles ex-prez dies by suicide over financial distress

-

NEW DELHI: Salil Kapur, ex-president of Atlas Cycles Limited, allegedly died by suicide at his home on Tuesday, police officers aware of the case said, adding that the 70-year-old is suspected to have shot himself with his licenced revolver. During a search of Kapur’s house on APJ Abdul Kalam Road, police also recovered a purported suicide note, which mentioned “financial distress” as the reason behind the extreme step, officers said, adding that they are conducting an inquiry into the matter.

Kapur’s family found him lying on the ground floor of the house and made a call to the police at around 2.30pm, police said. Kapur’s licensed revolver was found near his body, they added. He was rushed to AIIMS by police and the family, but was declared “brought dead”.

“His body was found in the puja room inside their house. We suspect he shot himself. We also found a suicide note,” deputy commissioner of police (New Delhi) Devesh Kr Mahla said.

Meanwhile, the local police team, a forensic science laboratory team, and a crime team seized the gun and collected evidence and samples from the spot. A senior police officer, on condition of anonymity, said, “The suicide notes names three-four people who allegedly harassed the deceased. The single-page note says that the deceased had taken loans from those people and was under pressure to repay the loan. We will now conduct an inquiry and take legal action accordingly.”

Earlier, in 2015, Kapur was arrested by the Delhi Police economic offences wing over his alleged involvement in three cheating cases. Police said he was later released on bail.

His sister-in-law also committed suicide in the same house in January 2020. She had left a note in which she had urged the family members to take care of themselves but did not mention the cause behind her taking the extreme step.
