Chamoli district administration and Hemkunt Sahib Gurdwara Trust are clearing the snow along the path of the Hemkunt Sahib Yatra, which will start on May 25, officials familiar with the matter said on Sunday.

Hemkunt Sahib gurdwara trust president NS Bindra said: “The work of clearing the snow from the Hemkunt Sahib yatra route from Ghangria to the portals of Hemkunt Sahib shrine being done by Indian army contingent and the group of volunteers from the Trust is nearing its completion. The snow clearing work from mule and horses track is in progress and it is likely that it would be completed prior to the opening of the shrine portal on May 25.”

He further said that with the snow cleared from the yatra route the first Jatha (group) along with Panj Pyaras (the five beloved ones of the Master) will leave for the shrine from Gurdwara in Rishikesh on May 22 and the portals of the shrine will open on May 25 with Guru da Prakash rituals amid the chants of devotional hymns.

“We are requesting the elderly people and the children to avoid taking up the yatra on first 15 days of opening of the Hemkunt Sahib yatra due to the accumulation of snow and should plan for the yatra after this period while the youth interested in the journey to the shrine should avoid any activity that creates nuisance as the it sends adverse message around the country about the committee,” he said.

Bindra said, “We can cater to 15,000 to 20,000 of pilgrims on a daily basis as we have that much carrying capacity especially in the Gurdwaras managed by the trust right from Haridwar to Ghangria. We are constructing another Gurdwara at Ratura on the yatra route with capacity of sheltering 5,000 pilgrims”
